One Sunday in September
despite temperatures in the 90s,
Mary and I took to the street to spin fiber.
Our spinning wheels flanking
the Sagrada storefront,
we sat enjoying each other's company
and turning wool and silk into beautiful yarns.
As we spun passersby smiled curiously
and greeted us
and children stopped
to gaze with wonder.
And then there were those
who stopped to talk to us...
One woman stopped to reflect
on her mother's handwork
and her own desire to keep that tradition
And another told us about the
voluminous lacy cowls
that she makes and gives away to loved ones.
Then she asked us a question no one else had:
"Why are you here spinning?"
We mused for a few moments
and then Mary hit the bullseye, saying,
"We're creating calm in this space..."
And it was true.
Or at least I felt it within and reflected
in the faces of those we'd interacted with
in the brief time we were gathered there.
It reminded me that no matter
what is going on in our world,
we can manifest calm right where we are,
through the simplest of actions.
